handmade halloween 2013 : spider-man & skeleton fairy

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

i ran out of days in the week to post these separately, so you get a double dose of Halloween costumes here on the blog today.  mostly photos, less talking, since i’ve previewed both already.  but now – they’re done!

presenting skeleton fairy and Spider-Man!

dun dun DUUUUUUNNNNNN!

spider-man and skeleton fairy costumes

okay who’s first…um….let’s go with skeleton fairy.

skeleton fairy costume

Em is normally such a little sweetie pie, but she really embraces the spooooookiness of Halloween.  initial “pink princess” and “pink fairy” costume plans suddenly turned macabre after i bought her some skeleton pajamas, and her idea of a skeleton fairy emerged.

skeleton fairy costume

i posted about her skeleton suit here; it’s a flashback skinny tee and sunki leggings with freezer paper stencils that glow.

skeleton fairy costume

her tutu i posted about here, from little things to sew (affiliate link).

skeleton fairy costume

…with the awesome ribbon.  can i admit i really enjoyed sewing in only black and white for her?  it was totally refreshing!

skeleton fairy costume

her wings and glitter wand are from party city (somewhat ironically, they’re “angel wings”).  and her fairy crown is loosely based on the one from aesthetic nest (thanks for the suggestion!).

skeleton fairy costume

the make up was all her idea – she asked for a white face with black eyes, a black nose, and black around her mouth. i went and got some glitter eyeshadow to sparkle her up a bit more for Halloween itself.  this was a trial run.

skeleton fairy costume

she totally gets into character in this costume – slightly freaky but pretty cute too.

and now….Spider-Man!

spider-man costume

this one all started with the felt mask from Jess, part of a superhero set she gave O.  he hadn’t really been into much of the superhero thing until he got those masks, and then declared he wanted to be Spider-Man for Halloween.

spider-man costume

happy to oblige, buddy.

spider-man costume

his shirt is a hacked bimaa hoodie with freezer paper stenciled spider and drawn-on webs.  i talked about it more here.

spider-man costume

i ended up adding a drawstring to the hood, because it was pretty huge on him.  when i first sewed the hood on, he was so upset about it, he said he didn’t want to wear it!  so i sat him down with some classic ‘60s Spider-Man episodes on YouTube to show him that the real Spider-Man ALWAYS wears a hood, otherwise he’s just Peter Parker!

he was sold.  now my kids are addicted to watching classic Spider-Man, which is admittedly hilarious.  and i’m addicted to the meme (often NSFW…but this one’s my favorite i think).

spider-man costume

anyway, every time we’ve let him wear this hoodie, it’s a fight to get it off so it’s not ruined by a meal/playing outside/pumpkin carving before the big day.  i’m sure once Halloween is over, he won’t want to wear anything else, but that’s okay – i made it out of “real fabric” and ended up finishing all the hems, so it should last.

spider-man costume

i’m most proud of the color blocking at the shoulders.

spider-man costume

i actually realized at the last minute (post photoshoot) that he didn’t have a treat bag, so i whipped one up out of felt with classic Spider-Man’s back logo on it.  it’s got just 6 legs and looks more like a fat potato bug, but hey, whatever ‘60s.

spider-man costume

i’ve got two pumped up, fully costumed kids…

NOW LET’S GO GET SOME CANDY!

girls’ trip to gilroy

first of all, thanks so much for your kind words and well-wishes from yesterday’s post!  i really appreciate it.  🙂

okay.  so i know i’ve mentioned a few times recently that i went to visit my friend Jess from Craftiness is not Optional.  today, it finally works out that we can post about it!

Jess and i both had to back out of going to Sewing Summit this year, her due to a nursing babe, me due to first trimester total lack of energy, but we both reaallllly wanted to meet each other and i had some saved up airline miles, so we decided to plan a trip when timing worked better!  AND since Em and Sadie have become such cute little long distance buddies, we thought it’d be extra special if she and i went to visit the CINOs together.  a girls’ trip!

oh boy was Em excited to go play with Sadie in person.  we had an EARLY flight but i had never seen her jump out of bed so fast!  i’d never taken a solo trip with her before, but she was so proud and happy to be going, travel was a breeze.

girl's trip to gilroy

we flew down the second weekend in October, at a time where Portland weather had already turned to fall, but central California weather still felt like summer!  no chill in the air at all, it was so nice.

girl's trip to gilroy

we hit the park, and the girls played dress up/my little ponies/barbies pretty much nonstop all weekend.  it was super fun to have them all wearing handmades, and to see Jess’ creations in real life!  at one point, Em, Sadie, and Charlotte were all wearing roller skate dresses.

roller skate trio

hehe i think Charlotte and O are twins with their “slow to wake up-ness.”  😉

i slept in Jess’ sewing room, a pretty amazing place to be – girl has a seriously enviable fabric stash!  once we finally got the girlies to settle down and sleep at night, she and i pretty much talked blogging and sewed until it was time for us to crash too.  here’s Jess serging with her hand on the pedal whilst dodging my suitcase.

girl's trip to gilroy

it’s always more fun to sew with a friend, and though i was super slow because of all the chatting and unfamiliar setup, i did manage to sew most of this blouse while i was there (and took photos of her in her version too!).  Jess cut out like a million leggings for KCW (which she posted about here).  oh and we also fabric shopped, of course, at a store we don’t have in Portland – Hancock Fabrics.

girl's trip to gilroy

we picked out a joke fabric challenge for the other one to sew with, so look for that at a future date.  Jess posted our stacks to Instagram and people guessed right away which stack belonged to which blogger – i mean, i HAD just found out i was having another boy, so i guess it’s pretty obvious, eh?  😉

and then i went animal style at in-n-out for lunch.

girl's trip to gilroy

last time i’d had those burgers, i was newly pregnant with Em.  i wasn’t sure if i had built them up in my mind as being better than they actually were, but they did NOT disappoint 6 years later.  SO FREAKIN GOOD.

on Sunday, i got to hang out with my pal Cherie and her lovely family, including her new baby girl, at an amusement park nearby while Jess was at church.  Em and Yuki rode a ride together!  such a fun bonus to see Cherie and visit with her while i was in town!

girl's trip to gilroy

the week before the trip, i went on a little sewing frenzy and made little gifts for each of Jess’ girls and Jess herself (plus a couple little gifts for Cherie’s girls that I didn’t get photos of, gah!).

here’s the CINO rundown at least…

a simple doll blanket and doll diaper from this free pattern for Charlotte, the 3 year old little mama.

doll blanket and diaper // skirt as top

the diaper has a buttonhole to pull a tail through, just in case she’s more of a stuffed animal gal than a doll gal (like I did for Em here).  it’s made out of fanfare pink elephants, with some toweling on the inside.  the blanket underside is a pretty gray gauze.

an apron for Sadie (the 5 year old) to cook in (found out Jess is one of those “purple haters” while i was visiting…HA!  oh well, DEAL WITH IT, JESS!!).  😉

fat quarter apron // skirt as top

the fabric is anna maria horner’s sinister swarm in blueberry, with a michael miller cotton couture in violet pocket.  it’s made out of a fat quarter and i keep meaning to do a tutorial, it’s a quick and fun little kid apron and great for gifting.

for Ava (the almost 1 year old), a briar rose crickets skirt with bias tape finished hem.

i figured she’ll be walking soon and it’ll be skirt wearin’ time!

and for my hostess Jess, a foldover clutch out of violet craft domino dot in clementine, with yarn dyed black essex linen contrast panel.

clutch tutorial is my own, with contrast panel supplemental tutorial over at you & mie.  it has a minty green zipper and lining.  thought it’d be a good date night purse for Jess.

i interfaced the outer fabric so it has some nice sturdiness to it, and am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Jess overwhelmed me with gifts for me and my little ones (including baby!), which you need to go check out in her post today!  she is quite the fabulous gifter.  here we are doublegramming (side-by-side stolen from Jess, hehe thanks girl).

it was really an inspiration to see Jess in action.  the girl just gets stuff DONE, ya know?  i’d always wondered how she does it all, and basically she doesn’t seem to procrastinate or hesitate to do anything.  she finishes a garment, gets photos, edits them quickly, blogs it.  she wakes up, starts breakfast, cleans up immediately.  there is just an efficiency, motivation, and positive attitude to her both in blogging and in life that i really admire,  she’s an amazing mother, super patient and sweet with her daughters, who are in turn really sweet to each other.

three little girlies

she was such a joy to be around, especially in the mornings.  whereas i stumbled groggily out of bed and made some tea to wake up, she already had crepes halfway done.  🙂

i came home with a new outlook on how to blog more efficiently and less “in my head” like i tend to do.  plus i just really love what she’s built with her blog and we had some really great discussions about blogging in general.  it was cool.  i LOVE meeting blogging pals in real life, and for our kids to meet too was icing on the cake (speaking of cake, she is really an awesome baker – whips up all sortsa stuff like you wouldn’t believe).

thanks sooooo much for having us, Jess, and thanks to Rory for allowing two strangers into your home for a weekend!  we had a blast, and we’re already talking about how Jess and Sadie can come visit us next time and we can do a “tasting tour of Portland.”  🙂

check out Jess’s post about our trip here!

a fun announcement : new contributor gig

i think most everyone probably had that teacher in high school / college whose teaching style really spoke to the way they learn.  that teacher presented information in a way no one else could, and it just sunk in.  for me there was a history/geography teacher in high school that taught us raunchy pneumonic devices (She Makes Him Eat Ovaries : Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario :: The Great Lakes).  it worked.

for sewing, it’s really no secret that my favorite teacher has always been Liesl Gibson of Oliver + S.  i stumbled across the free lazy days skirt not long after my husband gave me a sewing machine for mother’s day in 2009.  her free popover sundress was my first pattern with pieces.  the way she explains sewing is perfect for the way i learn, and i love her designs too.

i’ve now sewn 27 separate Oliver + S patterns (including those from Little Things to Sew), many multiple times.

IMG_2633

i have learned so many techniques from Oliver + S patterns, and i believe i learn how to sew things the “right” way with every new pattern i sew.

this isn’t news – i professed my love for their patterns here, and in pretty much every Oliver + S pattern i’ve posted about since.  i met Liesl at Quilt Market this spring, and after that, i’ve have been in regular touch with her, helping with new pattern launches in any small way that i can.  it all comes easily though – i love to sew with Oliver + S patterns, and i love talking about my love for them!

film petits

Liesl was one of the first modern indie kids clothes patternmakers and remains the gold standard – i think many kid’s pattern designers and sewing bloggers owe a lot to Liesl, ya know?  she really knows her stuff, she’s a creative person, she builds community, and i think she helped usher modern sewing for kids into popularity.  i know i wouldn’t be blogging today without the support i received from the flickr group.

if you sew an Oliver + S pattern, you can make a boutique-quality garment.  and that’s my goal – not to make homemade clothes, but handmade clothes.

feathers library dress

so when Liesl asked me to become a contributor to the Oliver + S blog, of course i jumped at the chance.  i’ll be working behind the scenes coordinating guest posts and brainstorming new ways for people to join in the sewing fun with Oliver + S patterns, and occasionally writing posts of my own too.

Liesl’s sweet intro for me went up yesterday, and my first post, up today, is a photo walkthrough (with bonus tips!) for the welt pocket method that’s included in the Art Museum Vest + Trousers pattern.  i first posted my Art Museum outfit here, and hope the photo tutorial helps take any remaining intimidation factor away.

>>  >  come check it out!  <  <<

as for why Liesl chose me for this gig? that remains a mystery.

kcw fall 2013: day 7:: parsley green parsley pants

KCW BONUS PROJECT!

once those costumes were finished i just felt like i wanted to sew something for everyday.  and since my little guy needs pants and i knew i could sew some up pretty quickly, i did just that.

meet straight-up-from-his-nap mr. mcgrouchypants and his parsley green parsley pants.

parsley green parsley pants

as the post title suggests, i used the parsley pants pattern by Rae in a 2T.  love this pattern – i helped test it in April, and back when i did that, they were pretty huge on him.  for some reason i thought they might still be big, but now the fit is PERFECT.  huh.  i guess kids must grow or something.

parsley green parsley pants

i chose the pintuck option for the first time and love how it takes the pants up a notch and makes them look a bit retro too.  also went for the front patch pockets, they’re fun.

parsley green parsley pants

the fabric is a soft medium weight green twill from Hancock Fabrics that i got when i visited Jess.  twill is one of my favorite fabrics to sew little guy pants with – sturdy but still soft.

parsley green parsley pants

i was super inspired by Laura’s green banyan pants and also stumbled on Sabra’s green jeans post from last fall, and styled my guy to match those two dapper little fellas.  gray cardigan and a white shirt with green pants, check!

parsley green parsley pants

now i REALLY feel like i participated in KCW – i usually sew basics that end up getting worn a lot and this project fulfills that.

although, based on his reaction to his spiderman costume and utter refusal to take it off whenever he tries it on, i might have just made a “basic” there too, eh?

thanks for following along!

kid's clothes week

kcw fall 2013: day 5&6:: skeleton fairy tutu

aside from a tweak or two, halloween costumes are now done!  i finished up spiderman on friday and also sewed skeleton fairy’s tutu.

skeleton fairy tutu

this is the tutu from little things to sew (affiliate link) by Liesl Gibson of Oliver + S, and i’ve made it a few times including for Em’s halloween costume two years ago!  she still wears that one, and now this one will be added to the mix.

skeleton fairy tutu

i made it out of shimmery white tulle with sparkly black tulle layered over the top and black chevron ribbon to tie it.  that ribbon is perfect for a skeleton, right?

skeleton fairy tutu

the black tulle is a bit stiff and “crunchy” and didn’t want to gather, making this tutu more difficult to sew, but the sparkles are great in person, kind of like a night sky.

skeleton fairy tutu

we hit the store for the rest of her costume – wings and a wand.  i’m considering some sort of hair clip or fairy crown or something, any suggestions for me there?  frankly i’m a bit sick of looking at all the “sexy” adult costumes that pop up when i try to get ideas for this one online.  they’re just so ridiculous (i mean, sexy bert and ernie?!  SERIOUSLY??).

but hey, my kids’ costumes are done and that was my primary KCW goal!  i’ll get photos of them and show ya this week.

how did you do?
