divided basket for a baby boy

it’s official, the Noodlehead divided basket pattern is my new go-to baby gift.  i made it once for a baby girl (who is set to arrive any day now), and this one for a baby boy!

divided basket for a baby boy

(bongo not included)

it’s for our out-of-town friends Lee & Erin, who welcomed their second little guy in March.  he’s a super sweet and adorable little redheaded fella; we got to go meet him the other weekend.  he inherited his big brother’s nursery, with gray walls and a bit of a whale/nautical theme, so i played off that and added some brighter colors in there too for his basket.

the moons are heather ross, used most notably here, the binding is kona olive, the blue/gray faux bois faric is from camp modern by jay-cyn designs for birch fabrics (available here, though i got mine at bolt) and the lining fabric is also by jay-cyn designs, from storybook II (available here, though mine was sent to me by Jess).

if you go check out the divided basket pattern, you’ll see a very similar pieced front pocket.  because i’m a big ol’ copycat.

anyway, once again, i LOVED sewing this basket.  it’s a super fun project – it feels like you’re doing a bunch of different techniques and the finishes are all clean and logical, not stressful, so it’s just a joy.  pretty quick, too.  only problem was i ran out of interfacing, so i spray-basted some ikea canvas to the back outer panel for structure – it worked!  (thanks for the idea, Jess)

i still haven’t made one of these to keep yet.  i keep making them, loving them, and giving them away!

but the babies need them.

so this is a tiny peek at O’s room – Erin painted this elephant for Em’s nursery before she was born so i figured it was an appropriate backdrop.  she put her spin on one we found at a baby decor store.

quick side notes: did you know you can now order heather ross’s older out-of-print designs on spoonflower?  and has anyone put in a pre-order for briar rose?  i’m kind of drooling all over it – it’s so sweet and summery!

come back for a fun blog-related announcement tomorrow!

kcw spring 2013 :: chambray parsley pants

aaaaand it’s kid’s clothes week time again!  woohoo!  and you may have already seen that KCWC founder meg has teamed up with dorie to build a whole new dedicated KCW site.  KCW will now be FOUR times a year and from what it sounds like, they’re working to turn it into a really great year-round resource for those of us sewing for kids, with all sorts of helpful features we can’t even imagine yet!  can’t wait to see what it all evolves into.

but now i’m rambling, and if i’m going to post almost every day this week, i can’t do that!  especially since i’m a little behind in my preparations.  i usually have everything cut out by the Sunday before KCW starts, and currently it’s just all in a pile – fabrics are chosen, but not cut out.  i did tape/cut out some PDF patterns, but not as much as i’d like.  okay.  stop talking.  show the pants and get back to sewing.

chambray kneepatch parsley pants

these fellas are Rae’s Parsley Pants pattern, now for sale!  i’m telling ya, this pattern is a must-have.  it’s basic with tons of options, is one of the quickest sews ever (like 30 minutes from first cut to final thread snip for the most basic version) but doesn’t look like pajamas – it’s just a great basic pant for boys and girls.  this is actually the third pair of Parsleys i’ve made for O, i just haven’t blogged the second pair yet (the first was orange).

chambray kneepatch parsley pants

the fabric is a lightweight stretch chambray from the mill end annex, with hemp knee patches (same fabric used here and here and here).  super comfy for him.

chambray kneepatch parsley pants

i’m not buying any new fabric (or patterns) for this KCW, i’m just trying to cross things off my mental “to make” list.  and this kid needed pants.

chambray kneepatch parsley pants he grows fast.

see that belly?

how could you miss it?

film petit: back to the future

where we’re going for film petit this month, we don’t need roads…

film petit: back to the future

and we’re back with more ’80s movie goodness for you today! it’s every 30-something’s introduction to the perils of time travel – 1985’s Back to the Future (affiliate link)!

film petit: back to the future

written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, BTTF is the story of Marty McFly, played by a teenage Michael J. Fox, who is accidentally sent back in time to 1955 in his friend Doc Brown’s souped up DeLorean. he must find a way back home while also ensuring his parents (also teens at the time) get together. if he fails in his mission, they will never get married and have him, and he will cease to exist…! and then his mom decides she thinks he’s cute and wants to go to prom with him! also, biff! ohhhhh dear. it’s a super fun movie and a must-watch for an entire generation.

so as far as i’m concerned, there are three true “main characters” in BTTF: Marty, Doc, and The DeLorean.

film petit: back to the future

i decided to go more conceptual than i have in film petits past…yep, I totally sewed an outfit inspired by a time traveling car.

film petit: back to the futureScreen Shot 2013-04-18 at 1.37.30 AM

i actually put an insane amount of thought into trying to bring the vague idea i had in my mind to an outfit that would make sense to everyone, so let’s see if you’re with me, starting with the hair.

film petit: back to the future

i actually just wanted to point out that i totally spiked up my 2 year old’s hair with pomade so he looked more 80s. okay moving on.

film petit: back to the future

DeLorean jacket! i knew i wanted to make a jacket, i wanted it to look a bit ’80s, a bit driving jacket-esque, and be lightweight and in DeLorean gray. i thought i’d add more detail to it, but the sewing got tricky and so i added detail elsewhere. oh oh! funny side note i remembered while writing this post – when we were choosing a grout color for our bathroom tile, one of the options was actually called “DeLorean Gray.”

we chose it.

if he lifts his arms, it’s even got gull-wing doors!

film petit: back to the future

i used Rae’s Flashback Skinny Tee as a base for the jacket, adding room to the neckline, armholes, and chopping off many inches to accommodate the rib knit band at the bottom and the length of the zipper. this is my first time sewing a separating zipper, and the first time sewing taffeta (!) which was the best color gray they had at JoAnn to give me the look I wanted (despite being really impractical for a 2 year old).

the final jacket reminds me of Jess’s Drive-inspired jacket, the creation that sparked this whole film petit idea in the first place, so i thought that was cool too!

film petit: back to the future

under the jacket is another Flashback Skinny Tee in 3T, which I freezer paper stenciled to look like the OUTATIME license plate on the car! i had a heckuva time figuring out what to put on a shirt, but as soon as I watched the movie again and saw that plate, i pretty much ran to my sewing room to make it. i added stripes to look like the California plate at the top, and i get a feeling he’ll wear this one a lot.

film petit: back to the future

on the bottom, another Rae pattern! this one is the fab new Parsley Pants pattern (I was a tester). i dyed a pair of my husband’s old khakis ORANGE to look like flame trails the DeLorean leaves behind as it rockets into the past in the parking lot of JCPenny (it was my husband’s idea to do that!). then with a stroke of late night inspiration, i drew tire treads onto the knee patches to nail home the car idea a little more.

oh and his neon green-tread shoes represent plutonium fuel. hehe.

film petit: back to the future

now, you didn’t think i’d make a delorean outfit without a flux capacitor, did you?!

film petit: back to the future

of course not. you would never.

film petit: back to the future

and there you have it! my little guy says it’s time to go visit our two fellow time travelers and see some amazing and wonderful things.

film petit: back to the future

off he goes! won’t you follow him?

film petit: back to the future

first, i can’t believe that we lured the Queen of All Sewing Bloggers, Dana of MADE, into joining us for film petit! Jess and I were so excited to have her sew with us, and we  realized she’s just as much of a procrastinator as we are (score!). Dana made a super awesome Mary McFly outfit for her son Owen, AND a bonus ’50s girl outfit for her little Clara – both are perfection. GO CHECK IT OUT! thanks for playing, Dana!!

aaaaaand my partner-in-crime Jess sewed Doc Brown’s white jumpsuit for her daughter Elsie. yes, daughter. it’s freakin’ hilarious, Jess always gets the silliness just right. GO SEE, GO SEE!

a couple of superheroes

i’m always curious with other sewing bloggers what the clothes look like AFTER they’re blogged, like how (and if) they’re worn in daily life.  this is pretty much how my kids look on the weekends these days.  Em is especially into “the layered look.”

superhero cape

they both are in outfits of their own choosing. okay…well maybe i asked O if he wanted to wear his superhero cape (that i made him for christmas and hadn’t blogged yet). and then maybe Em decided she wanted to wear hers too. and then maybe i just went ahead and took pictures of them in the backyard, unmoved lawn, spaghetti-o face and all.  keepin’ it casual over here.

superhero cape

every kid needs a superhero cape!

superhero cape

his super deeds include watching big sis climb the lilac, broom riding, secret keeping, and giant bouncy ball tossing.

superhero cape

on her: cape, cardigan, store-bought t-shirt in size 3T but it’s pink so she put it on, doily skirt with tulle circle skirt underneath, sparkle leggings and sparkle hair clip from delia, butterfly boots from great aunt Nancy

on him: cape (from my tutorial), raglan t, “basketball shorts” over sweatpants that used to belong to E, socks

superhero cape

i used this awesome rocketship print from Anna for the cape lining. isn’t it fun? i think it’s riley blake…? the outside of the cape is various kona cottons with bright orange and red topstitching.

superhero cape

and one of many blurry running shots. he’s just a tiny superhero fighting crime, nbd. 🙂

PS FILM PETIT with DANA up next!

submarine pullover

i’m happy to be the next stop on the blog tour for Pattern Anthology, a really cool collaboration effort between a group of four talented independent patternmakers. when i was invited to participate, i saw that Shauna of Shwin Designs was one of the designers. i quickly signed up to sew one of her patterns, because i had never tried one before! i thought it’d be fun to sew for my little guy, so i chose her submarine pullover (affiliate link) to review today.

submarine pullover

the submarine pullover is a cute little layering hoodie that closes with a button placket. the hood is lined but the rest of the pullover isn’t, so it’s actually a quicker-than-you-might-expect-it-to-be sew. it’s a well-known fact that Shauna is a massive Beatles fan, so i couldn’t resist adding a little YELLOW topstitching to the SUBMARINE, ifyoucatchmydrift! the added topstitching did increase my sewing time, but it still wasn’t too bad overall, especially since i’m not a very experienced placket-sewer and her instructions for that were very easy to follow.

submarine pullover

my main fabric is a nice drapey seersucker i got at mill end, and the perfect little whale print from jay-cyn’s storyboek line for birch fabrics was sent to me by Jess. i could never part with a fabric as cute as this, but i guess she doesn’t have a boy to sew for (at least for now), so i gladly accepted her generous offering. thanks Jess, it’s so wonderful! this color seems to be out of stock online but there’s a little of the blue version left at fabricworm.

submarine pullover

the whale print was too cute to use only as a hood lining, so i also used it for the casing at the waist, and bound the sleeves rather than hemming them. it’s also hiding inside the pockets, which i constructed a little differently than the pattern (sewed rightsides together before topstitching them to the hoodie).

submarine pullover

i had a button conundrum on this one. you need fairly large buttons to be in proportion with the placket, but i didn’t have any in my stash. i hit up my favorite button vendor and found two contenders – these awesome dark blue ones with “grains of sand” inlay, and cool red-orange ones that added a fun pop of color and really stood out. i was stumped, so i put it to my instagram peeps to decide, and it was a tie vote! i went with my gut and chose the blue, and i’m happy i did. classic. beachier.

submarine pullover

i still added color with the yellow topstitching, which i first did here and love. oh and his ever-present green H&M pants. i’m gonna hate it when he grows out of these, they’re so fun…and somehow go with everything?

submarine pullover

i sewed the 2T pullover, and it fits O really well. it’s just a tad difficult to pull on since the fabric has no stretch, so size up if you’re in between. once we get it on, it’s totally fine. and his head is huge but the hood fits him really well! his old style TOMS, on the other hand, did not fit well. so he took them off and immediately placed his feet in some mud. boys.

submarine pullover

the entire beachy pattern collection was on sale through March 24 from Pattern Anthology, but is now available individually at Go To Patterns (affiliate link).  check it out!

submarine pullover

he’s ready for a long walk on the beach. oh and quick side note – i had brought the in-process pullover with me to pick the buttons out, and one of the sales gals said “that is so cute! i wish there were patterns like this when my son was little!” i love what pattern makers like Shauna (and many others!) are doing for boy sewing – designing cute, modern clothes that aren’t boring at all. we’re in a golden age!

the tour stops have been awesome so far, so if you haven’t seen them popping up around blogland already, be sure to browse the links below…and head over to Go To Patterns (affiliate link) or the individual designers’ shops to nab these great summer patterns!
