polka dot geranium dress

happy new year!

i know a bunch of my sewing blog buddies have been doing 2012 recap / 2013 goal setting posts, and since so much happened for me with this blog in 2012 i still might do that, but right now i feel more like blogging this dress!

geranium snowflake dress

it’s Made by Rae‘s newest release, the Geranium Dress. you know how i love Rae’s patterns, and i think every time she releases a new one i say “she just keeps getting better and better” but it’s really true. i was a pattern tester for this dress and i only had nitpicky type comments for her, really; it was already a high quality pattern even before the testers got our hands on it! I think this could work as a “first pattern from pieces” dress for a beginning sewist ready to tackle buttons and pleats; it’s all explained so well.

this pattern is also Rae’s response to requests for a “mini washi dress (remember when i made one myself but had the big head problem?), but Rae also built this pattern to give the sewer oodles of options to make a different dress every time…check this out:

geranium dress options

three sleeve options, two skirt options, three neckline options, two length options, and pockets! the way she presents the choices isn’t confusing or overwhelming, it’s really clear and easy to follow. love that.

i picked faux cap sleeve with dress-length pleated skirt, side seam pockets, and notched V neckline. the bodice is 3T and the skirt is 4T (i just increased the seam allowance on the skirt a little to make it line up). i picked the options that would be the quickest to sew and the most “formal” looking, since i was on a time crunch before Em’s ballet recital but wanted her dress to feel holiday-appropriate.

it’s a really quick and satisfying sew, and i made it in a night! considering i started from taping the pattern together and was taking pattern test notes too, it’s seriously fast.

she wore this dress to her ballet Christmas program, her school Christmas program, and Christmas Eve festivities with the family, plus out and about (basically whenever it’s clean). i sewed it in a cheap black and white polka dot cotton from Joann that I also used to pattern test Rae’s pierrot tunic last fall – totally different feel on a more structured dress though, right? i love that it looks like snow.

i used the rest of the pink elephant buttons i first used for her japanese tea party jacket. she loves that touch of course.

for her “fancy occasions,” i made her a little sequined headband out of some trim that i just hand sewed together and hit with some fray check. she loves wearing headbands and other hair accessories lately, it’s always interesting what she comes down wearing. 😉

PS – need more Geranium inspiration? Rae posted all the pattern tester versions here, and my personal favorite is my pal Cherie’s eyelet dress. SO gorgeous!

gorgeous fabrics and a new cape

sometimes you’re just going along, sewing stuff because you love to, linking to your fabric and pattern sources, the usual blogging bit, not expecting anything amazing to come of it.

and sometimes something amazing comes of it.

back when i sewed the breezy green eyelet tunic as a guest tutorial for kojodesigns, i linked to Britex Fabrics in San Francisco as my source.  it really is a wonderland of fabric, and this year i was lucky enough to travel to SF twice (once for work, once for an overdue birthday trip with my husband).  both times, Britex was a stop i knew i had to make.  i actually felt a little out of my element there – there are SO many gorgeous high-fashion apparel fabrics, my head spun with ideas.  i picked up a few selections and used the green eyelet for the tunic, with the rest squirreled away.

Britex noticed my post.  and a little while back, they contacted me wondering if I’d be interested in a sponsorship/collaboration to help make people aware of their blog and help promote upcoming sales.  i jumped at the chance.

they run monthly sales on certain fabric categories, and their sale fabric in January is wool (and wow do they have some amazing wool!).  they asked if i could sew something out of Britex wool that they could show in their newsletter and post about on their blog.  the newsletter comes out January 1 and the sale starts that day too, but my guest post on the Britex blog is up today – right here!  go check it out!

i made a cape for Em using this gorgeous midweight peacock blue wool on the outside, and this beautiful cotton voile on the inside.  in person, it’s especially rich-looking.

the cape pattern…that’s another exciting bit.  i guess i’ve linked to Oliver + S enough times that Liesl Gibson, the owner, took notice of that too.  i’m now an every-so-often contributor to their blog (my first post was here), but she also offered to send me a few of the upcoming patterns to show how they could be made right at release, before inspiration starts showing up in the flickr pool.  so fun.  can’t wait to show you more in the next few months.

this is the upcoming Forest Path Cape, sewn in a 4T.  it will be available as a “singles” digital pattern for children (6 months – 12 years) AND adults in mid-January (now available for purchase!).  it’s a really unique and modern take on a cape, and would be a very quick and easy sew if i wasn’t so dang nervous about cutting into the glorious imported wool and voile that Britex sent over (which made me take twice as long to sew it)!  hehe.   you can read more about the cape over at the Britex blog and more about the cape patterns on the Oliver + S blog.

for those visiting from Britex, i promised i’d talk about the leggings and shirt underneath, too.

the leggings are the Figgy’s sunki pattern.  i sewed them in a 4/5 and shortened them just a bit.  they’re actually made from my husband’s old merino wool sweater (the body of the sweater, not the sleeves) and sewed up in a flash.  they are SO soft and warm on her and i love how they complement the peacock blue wool of the cape.

the shirt underneath, you may recall if you’ve been reading a while, is the figgy’s ayashe, sewn in Nani Iro double gauze.  this is what the shirt looks like…

and my full post is right here.

i’m just beyond thrilled to have both of these companies, whose products i admire so much, approach me with such fun and exciting opportunities.  really guys, i’m in disbelief.

hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are coasting out the week until New Year’s!

seasons greetings, happy holidays, and…

merry christmas

i hope you and your family have a peaceful and joyous Christmas!  we’re eagerly awaiting Santa’s visit and looking forward to lots of family party time.  Em is hoping Santa brings a pink bicycle and an elephant (shock of shocks), and O is hoping for a helicopter.  probably won’t get a white Christmas around here, but it’s not raining so that’s a plus.

up there is my favorite ornament – i got it when i was just a year old according to the date on the bottom (my mom was great about labeling our ornaments as kids).  it enjoys a place of prominence on the tree each year.  why a sparkly ice cream cone?  no idea, but it makes me smile every time.

take care, and Merry Christmas!!

film petit: moonrise kingdom

ooooh wes anderson, you’re just too good. we can’t stay away!

film petit: moonrise kingdom

it was only a matter of time before we were lured in by the amazing costumes in the visually stunning moonrise kingdom, which came out earlier in 2012. this movie is a story of Sam the khaki scout and Suzy the rebellious bookworm, two kids that each feel alone on opposite sides of the wooded Island of New Penzance until they meet each other by chance. they begin corresponding, then they plan a daring runaway meet up and outdoor adventure, which culminates in a wedding! here are a few shots from the movie to set the scene i was inspired by:

film petit: moonrise kingdom

while Suzy’s collared dress is an iconic garment in the movie, her coat in this scene really blew me away too. i love the rosy-raspberry colors set against the greenery of the island and Sam’s khaki scout uniform, as well as the unique design. i knew if i made a coat like that for Em, she’d likely get a lot of use out it as a winter coat, so i went for it! and I knew Sam’s uniform details would be fun to tackle in their own right.

feather pillow for a sewing friend

sorry guys, another quilted pillow.  last one for a while (maybe?  maybe not?  they’re just too fun!).

feather pillow

this one was for my sewing buddy, Caila.  the girl is a ray of sunshine, i knew she was working on decorating her house, and i had so much fun making this pillow for her!

feather pillow

i met Caila once when she was in town, and we had a fun lunch talkin’ blog stuff, sewing stuff, kid stuff, Portland stuff…you know, the usual.  i also got to meet her littlest adorable towhead Stryder – such a cutie pie!  it was actually right around the time i discovered Caila’s blog in the first place, but i saw right away that she has a really bright, happy, colorful style.  i also trolled her pinterest boards to find some specific fabrics that she might like to see in the pillow.  pinterest is so helpful for gift-giving!

feather pillow

i pieced the feathers out of my most color-saturated scraps and fat quarters using anna maria horner’s (free) feather bed quilt pattern.   this is actually one quilt block and it turned out to be perfect pillow size, though i kinda wish i’d narrowed the white space between the two just a bit and added a little to the outsides to bring them together.    they were super fun to make though – i really enjoyed picking out the fabrics and learning the piecing method, which is different than anything i’ve done before and very satisfying.  i even have a few extra feather sides for possible future pillows!

feather pillow

the back is AMH and a kona solid and it closes with a zipper.  this project is an amazing fat quarter / scrap user upper.

recommend!

so i’m sewing a bunch of gifts for Christmas and realizing that i’m not going to get to blog some of them!  one already went in the mail without being photographed (maybe i can talk the recipient into snapping a few pics), and i’m making some teacher gifts that i doubt will see the light of day (LITERALLY) before i give them away.  this annoys me – sometimes it feels like a project isn’t “done” until it’s blogged.  anyone else weird like that?  guess i should’ve started sooner, eh?
