story behind this one: lately when Em comes out of her room having dressed herself, she often looks like she’s headed to dinner on Maui or something. plumeria hair clip, skirt, lei, whole deal. she also has been asking me to make her a maxi skirt like mine.
boom. made her a hawaiian girl dress.
i saw a super cute dress on groovy babyโฆand mama this morning and made my own version as soon as i could, because i knew it’d be fast and Em would love it.
the fabric is a lightweight voile that fru-t sent me when i won a giveaway of hers a while back. she sent me a bunch of amazing fabrics, actually, and this is the first i could bring myself to cut into! i just gathered the front and attached some fold over elastic to the top.
Em loves it, perfect for this suddenly summer weather we’ve gotten here in the past couple days. here she is doing a halfhearted hula.
alright, that wraps up KCW for me! i’m just out of time. see, i didn’t even finish this dress, the straps still need to be sewn down.
HOWEVER. it’s a good thing Rae extended the Spring Top Sewalong, because tomorrow i have a free pattern and tutorial for you! like you meaning YOU – the grown up gal! i’m pretty dang thrilled about it – i even taught myself illustrator, so it’s all digital and stuff. ๐
see you tomorrow!
well I saw groovy baby and mama’s dress too and thought “i should make that” and now seeing yours…i probably should make that ๐ very pretty
This is so Em! I bet she adores it! I totally spied that dress you were inspired by and thought Clover would like one too. Not sure I have any elastic in the right width in my stash though….
Tara, I’ve got a TON of that elastic…I could probably send you some if you’d like ๐
Well look at you with the quick KCW squeeze in! (I said that like it’s a thing?) It’s cute on Em.
Oh, it’s so pretty! I saw that dress too and have a little ballerina who would love it. If your tutorial is that super cute purple top you made I will be making one pronto!
It is! That was my wearable muslin. ๐
When’s your next trip?!?!? She’s ready NOW! Beautiful dress! I love crisscross straps.
Great dress! I love long dresses on little gals ๐
You taught yourself illustrator? I bow to your skills!
And that dress looks so flowy and comfy and bright and gorgeous. Must go back to Hawaii now!
I definitely watched the first (free) video by Melly Sews, that taught me which tools are which. She also gave me key advice at the end. Major props to Melissa! But as far as scanning/arranging/tracing/adding text and markings/adding a cutting border/exporting…taught myself. ๐
What a great dress, my E would absolutely adore it. So excited to see the pattern tomorrow! Way to go, you!!!
oh so lovely dress! the fabric is wonderful!
I have never tried fold over elastic, I need to find some, where do you buy your fold over elastic?
I got it locally at Mill End…maybe if you have a local fabric store that is good for apparel fabrics rather than quilting…?
That’s lovely!
what a cute, breezy dress! get that girl to hawaii!!
hey Kristin- so happy that you used that fabric! and that dress is perfect for the print. I’ve thought of you all week with some of my fabric finds.
