popping in with a little birthday present i made for my sister Laura.  she loves to bake but doesn’t own a stand mixer (!), so for her “main present” the family teamed up on funds to help her buy one.  couldn’t just leave it at that, though!  had to make her a pot holder too.

i love to make pot holders as gifts.  they satisfy the urge to do a little bit of quilting, they’re super practical, they’re quick and fun.  i can make them with scraps or a fat quarter in an evening.  haha too bad my own pot holders are basic black ones that i bought when i was in college…

it’s a difficult thing to design a unique children’s dress these days.  super difficult.  the market is flooded with patterns, and now that i’ve been sewing dresses for this little gal for about 5 years, i’ve gotten to the point where i’m able to sew a lot of things with only a quick glance at the instructions.  a lot of it just becomes intuitive.  that’s all well and good, but it’s also very refreshing to sew something that feels new and different!

snack bag review

i’ve been pretty quiet lately because i’ve been sewing my little heart out in the background.  you guys, a new film petit is coming!!  between having a baby (me) and moving to another state (Jess) we let it slide for a few months.  but it’s back in the works, and we’re super duper pumped.

today, i don’t have a project i sewed to show you, but i do have a project that was sewn by a mama and is still pretty awesome.  just because i love to sew doesn’t mean i love to sew everything, ya know?  there are certain things that i just can never seem to sit down and actually make.

i think we probably all have stuff like that – some people think it’s silly to buy t-shirts, some love sewing them.  for me, it’s apparently snack bags i can’t do.  we’ve still been buying plastic even though i’ve MEANT to make some reusable ones for years.  never did.

i had it in my head that i wanted to make this exact dress, and it was driving me bonkers that i couldn’t find the time to get it done earlier in the summer!  but finally, with a labor day vacation to central oregon looming, i got it made.

the pattern is jamie christina’s mission maxi view A, a dress i’ve seen lots of gals make (my all-time favorite is Kelli’s tie dye version).  i bought the paper pattern at Bolt, which was a good decision (vs PDF) because the two pattern pieces were so big, i had to move to my living room floor just to trace my size!

E’s first day of first grade is today, so i made her a new dress…yesterday!

first grade already, i can’t believe it.  she learned so much “big kid stuff” over the summer (riding a bike!  swimming!  whistling the imperial march!) and she’s super excited to start a new school year.  we were out of town for the long weekend, so i had to choose a quick-yet-satisfying dress to sew for her to wear on her first day.  i think i picked a good one.
