glow stick swimsuit bath

i love going swimming in the wintertime.  blame it on my 4 years of varsity high school swim team (don’t get too impressed, we were a total joke and never won a meet), but when the weather cools down, i crave the pool.  this morning, i suited both kids up, layered sweats and a bathrobe on top, and hopped in the car with the intention of taking a dip in a wonderful outdoor soaking pool nearby.  it’s almost as warm as a hot tub – glorious.  but it was CLOSED!  something about regrouting.  BOO.  Em was really excited to go to the pool, so we tried pool #2, a bit of a drive.  no luck – no open swim on wednesdays!  finished with driving the kids all over town (and the baby in a not-so-absorbent swim diaper with lunchtime fast approaching), i tried to think of something to make up for this double disappointment.  my mind went to…glow stick bath!

have you seen this on pinterest?  it’s been all over lately.  you crack open some leftover halloween glow sticks, toss them in the bath, and the kids go nuts.  this was the first time i tried it, and both kids LOVED it.  i let them both wear their swimsuits in there (i remember it was fun when my mom let us do that), and they stayed in longer than they would have swam!  we don’t have a window in our bathroom, so it worked even in the daytime.

pinterest saves the day!

my 2011 sewing recap

it was a big sewing year for me!  i started blogging in march 2011, and that really seemed to kick me in the pants – blogging rather than posting things randomly on flickr kept me sewing more regularly (because i was playing my viewership stats like a video game – AHEM!), and sewing multiple times a week also made me feel like my skills really improved this year (thank goodness, because i need all of them for my project run & play shenanigans).  i started sewing in mid-2009, so i’m still constantly learning, but now have a nice base of knowledge to work from too.  pretty neat to realize that.

i had lots of firsts this year – first quilt, first clothes for me (a shirt, a dress, and a never-blogged, never-worn skirt – hey, it happens!), first guest posts (bibs here and elbow patches here), and first giveaway.  it’s really fun to realize i’ve actually joined a great little community of bloggers – even though most of us have only met online, i feel like we all share this crazy sewing obsession, and are real friends that i could go to lunch with and the conversation would flow even though we’d never “actually met” before.  i love you guys!

here are my blogged projects from 2011 (sorry, not linking to each one – feel free to take a stroll back through the ol’ archives if you are curious).  these are pretty much in reverse date order, or ask me and i can help you find something:

and here are a few projects that i completed early in the year, before i started blogging and was still only posting to flickr:

1. hoot doorstop, 2. quartet of boy bibs, 3. sprinkle gift, 4. knitting tote, 5. sister garland, 6. reading nook, 7. doll wardrobe, 8. sweet little dress, 9. fishy bean bags, 10. corduroy pants, 11. necktie onesie, 12. counting bean bags, 13. oilcloth coin purse

in 2012, i hope to sew more clothes for me, make at least one more quilt, really learn how to sew zippers into garments (the failed skirt is largely zipper error), work to decrease my stash rather than continuing to add to the mound (that’s what everybody says, right?), and maybe throw in a project for my husband?  that could be interesting.

thanks so much for your support and encouragement, i really appreciate it.  blogging wouldn’t be any fun if it was just me talking to nobody.  🙂

cheers to 2012!

a trip to sunriver (and down memory lane)

i didn’t do any sewing last weekend – we were with my side of the family (mom, dad, sisters, brother-in-law, a boyfriend, a friend, and nieces) at our go-to family summer vacation spot: sunriver.  it’s located in central oregon, east of bend, where the mornings are cool but the days are hot and sunny, the air smells like pine, and the days are spent bike riding, swimming, and barbecuing.  early morning trips to get doughnuts are the norm, as are end-of-the-day hot tub soaks.

sunriver trips are a family tradition.  i looked through my baby book, and i think a good third of the photos in it were taken there.  here’s me, my mom, her parents, and her sister in 1983:

and me with my sisters and grandparents in 1985 and 1987 (that’s baby laura about to go through the railing – grandma protected her!):

and my dad, rockin’ a moustache in 1990, keepin’ me safe from the sun while my baby sister lilly chilled out on a beach blanket (dad was a proponent of under-swimsuit t-shirts even before rashguards became the norm – so ahead of his time!).  i’m also sporting a swimsuit sewed by my mom:

i learned to ride a bike there (with my dad in 1988):

this year, we played soccer on that same field:

baby hair lightened in the sun, bellies were filled with Goody’s ice cream:

deer paid a visit before breakfast (i’m pretty sure there were four in that photo, but i can only spot three now):

Em’s two-and-a-half year old cousin C took a pony ride, but Em was scared, so she observed:

we played games, and had a birthday party:

on the morning we were set to go home, Em said “i want to live in a house like this,” and though the house itself was great, i think she really meant she wants to live with her grandparents, aunts, uncle, and cousins, spend her days skipping naps in favor of visits to the pool, get hauled around in a bike trailer while munching on fruit snacks, and stay up late to talk and eat pie.  i wish we could’ve stayed a few more days, myself…

oh hi!

okay, so i’ve been posting my sewing/crafting photos to flickr for a year and a half now, and i think maybe i’ve outgrown it? maybe i have more to say than just a few words below one photo?  i think so!

now that i think the blog is up and running well enough, i’m going to go sew something, then get my daughter to model it at some point. that’s the hard part. she’s very into dancing lately, and photos are hard to get…

let’s do this!
