tonight, i made a bucket hat
with elephants on one side
it’s this pattern
from this book
the fabric is tiny elephants by daiwabo, lined with natural linen. i made it in the 6-12 month size for my son, who is a december baby and HATES the sunshine. lucky for him, he hasn’t had to “deal with it” much yet this year.
a few things:
- my plan is to try to sew projects that have been on my mind or my to do list for a while. i’ve wanted to sew something from “little things to sew” because i adore oliver + s patterns, and this bucket hat was great! next up is a dress from “carefree clothes for girls,” which i’ve been itching to sew from for over a year but the patterns start at size 4 and my daughter wasn’t big enough yet. i think she is now.
- i work at an office all day and sew after the kids are in bed at night during the week. this will make natural-light photography and photos of clothing on bodies very difficult (if not impossible) if i’m planning to blog in a timely manner this week. sorry if my artificial light photos assault your eyes.
- i think i’m going to post whatever i finish each evening, then do a round up of everything later with the kids actually wearing it during the daytime. i think that’ll work.
- doubt i’m going to get a lot of sleep this week. i’m okay with that.
well, you did better than me – i never got my hour in. i’m doing double time today!
p.s.- the hat is cute!
Oh I know about the sleep – I found it very hard to stop last night. Luckily my lightbulb blew and while sewing by only the light of the sewing machine is somewhat romantic, it finally convinced me to give up and go to bed.
Nevertheless. Love the hat. Enjoy your sewing this week!

Very cute hat!
So Cute! You should visit my blog sewcountrychick to add it to the kids sewing blog linkup party. I love making hats too.
Darling hat! I love that elephant print. I wish stores around here carried more things like that. By the way I have the same problem with taking photos of things I make since they are mostly made when my children are in bed. Oh well;)
I love the hat! You have inspired me to make one for my little mister! Do you like the Oliver & S book? Are there good projects to sew in there? I have contemplated about buying it….
It’s a great hat pattern – I’d never made a hat like this before, and it turned out really well. This is the first project I’ve made from the book, but in general, Oliver + S patterns are so clear. There are fun accessory-type things in there (not really clothes). You could check out Liesl’s blog posts about the various projects if you’re curious to see more before you buy: http://www.oliverands.com/blog/labels/little-things-to-sew
I was going to ask you about the book but saw that you already answered if it was good or not. Thanks for the link. And great blog you have.
okay, I just have to add yay for a working mom who sews! I work part-time and it’s so fun to meet other mommy bloggers who sew and work at an office!
oh thanks, anna! i’ve been a follower of yours for a long time – thanks for the comments! yep, 4 days a week for me. the hardest part is finding daylight for photos through the week during the morning/evening rush. summer will make that easier… 🙂
Hi! This looks like a great pattern. Have you had any experience having it worn yet? Does your little one like to wear it and keep it on? So many cute hats out there – I’d like to make the one with the highest possibility of staying on the intended head. 🙂 Thanks much!
